The Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD), is a sintered product. It is formed by natural or synthetic randomly-orientated diamond crystals having a fixed granulometry (it can vary between 2 and 25 μm), which is mixed with (usually, Co or Ni) and then compressed at high temperature and pressures. The powders are laid over a tungsten-cardide flat substratum (Carbide) and then sintered at extremely high temperatures and pressures, in the presence of a melted metal that is used as a catalyst. The result of this process is an extremely dense abrasive layer, approximately 0.5mm thick, which is completely fixed to tungsten carbide. This way, the hardness and the resistance to abrasion of the diamond are combined with the toughness and the solidity of the Carbide. The synthectic diamond is employed in several industrial fields and, specifically, in the sector relating to cutting tools: by now, the PCD has been widely used for many years to manufacture inserts to cut abrasive materials, such as chipboard, MDF, also coated and laminated. The PCD is supplied in 57/60mm-diameter pellets with 3 different granulometry levels: Standard (25 μm), Fine (10 μm) and Extra Fine (2 μm). In the majority of cases, the finer is the granulometry of the diamond, the better is the quality of the cutting edge, with a single disadvantage: the smaller the crystals, the more fragile the cutting edge. The employment of very fine grains is useful only if you cut extremely abrasive materials.
